Wind Turbine Lifetime Extension

By the end of a turbine’s lifetime owners face three possible scenarios. To either decommission the turbine, repower the turbine or Lifetime Extension.

Lifetime Extension of Wind Turbines as part of maintenance

With Lifetime Extension, we refer to extending the life of the turbine by providing a local authority or agency (that gives the authority to continue operating the turbine) qualified documentation, that proves the turbine is in a proper condition to continue operation for a prolonged period (by the end of the designed lifetime). This is only a possible solution through a specific forecasting and maintenance program for the turbine.

At 3WIS we highly recommend turbine owners to consider Lifetime Extension as a way of maintenance and not only as an investment at the end of the turbine’s original life expectancy.
The service we offer to ensure an approved lifetime extension of the turbine is a three-step model containing: Assessment & Feasibillity studies, Onsite NDT Inspections and Service & Repair.

Preventive maintenance of your wind turbine

"The main benefit with Lifetime Extension through a maintenance concept, is the cost effectiveness and straight forward sustainable solution, to extend the payoff from your asset with additional years."

The 3WIS lifetime extension process

1. To simulate and identify which parts of the turbine that are exposed and critical regarding loads and fatigue areas, which leads to an inspection protocol.
2. Performing the developed inspection protocol and providing an overview of the state of the turbine.
3. If any findings have been detected during the inspections, these will be repaired in order to bring the turbine into an operative condition with the possibility of prolonging the turbine’s life.
4. We provide your local authority with the required documentation to approve the lifetime extension of your wind turbine for additional operation.

FAQ: Life Extension of Wind turbines

What is Lifetime Extension of a wind turbine?

Lifetime Extension for wind turbines refers to assessing and upgrading turbines to continue operating safely and efficiently beyond their original designed lifespan, typically 20–25 years. This involves obtaining approval from a permitting authority based on the turbine's condition and a documented maintenance plan.

What does it require to Lifetime Extend a wind turbine?

Approval from a local agency or authority, supported by documentation and a maintenance plan demonstrating that the turbine meets required standards for extended operation.

When is the right time to lifetime extend your wind turbine?

The right time is as the turbine nears the end of its designed lifespan. At 3WIS, we suggest integrating Lifetime Extension into the overall maintenance strategy early on to streamline the approval process when required.

What is important to ensure for a wind turbine to be approved for lifetime extension?

The turbine must be in a safe physical condition and meet environmental standards to operate beyond its original designed life expectancy.

Which steps are involved in the process of lifetime extending a wind turbine?

At 3WIS, we develop a comprehensive maintenance strategy incorporating engineering, ongoing inspections, and targeted servicing of exposed areas. This proactive approach ensures the turbine’s condition is well-documented for a smoother lifetime extension process.
